Between 1491 and 1493, Greinburg Castle was built by the brothers Heinrich and Siegmund Prüschenk with the permission of Emperor Frederick III (according to a document dated 10 March 1488). They later became Imperial Barons of Stettenberg and Counts of Hardegg. This castle is considered to be one of the first castles in the German-speaking world.
The current appearance of Greinburg Castle was shaped under Count Leonhard Helfrich von Meggau, who acquired the castle in 1621. Over the following centuries, the castle changed hands several times until it was finally acquired by Duke Ernst I of Saxe Coburg and Saalfeld (later Saxe Coburg and Gotha) from Josef Fink, the mayor of Hainburg, in 1823. Since that time, Greinburg Castle has been owned by the Dukes of Saxe Coburg and Gotha and the foundation of the family of the Dukes of Saxe Coburg and Gotha (from 1928).
Greinburg Castle offers numerous impressive sights, including one of the largest and most beautiful arcaded courtyards of the late Renaissance, a Gothic cell vault, the impressive Great Knights' Hall with castle chapel and one of the most magnificent Christmas altars in Austria. You can also admire the Coburg Rooms, a family museum of the House of Saxe Coburg and Gotha, and the Stone Theatre, a remarkable gem from the 17th century.
